Talented artist Patrick Valenza presents uniquely alternative interpretations of traditional tarot with symbolism inspired by childhood dreams. Stylized moon-faced characters created from manipulated photographs of 18th century tombstones are set against evocative backgrounds. Incorporated into the artwork are surreal scenes of distant smoke stacks, insane asylums, and abandoned buildings.

Valenza’s booklet gives interesting card descriptions and interpretations, both upright and reversed. The symmetric card backs, showing different phases of the moon, allow for reversed readings. Also included in the booklet is a unique ten-card spread called the Lunatic Spread, which mimics the shape of the full moon, and derives energy from its circular pattern.

Deviant Moon Tarot has drawn something of a cult following and was voted as the Top Tarot Deck of All Time by Aeclectic Tarot readers.

Cards measure: 2.75" x 5.125"

Tarot is an individual choice

It's hard to review tarot cards in a way that feels meaningful. Unless you're just collecting decks that you like the looks of, there's something that draws you to each deck individually. In this case it was the uncanny look and dreamlike quality of the art combined with this feeling of unease and nostalgia. I felt like I'd see and maybe owned these cards in the past (though I assure you I haven't). They reminded me of Liminal Spaces but in tarot card form, if that makes sense.

So I decided to pick them up and it was an easy choice for me. But it may not be for you and that's ok. Again, each person must look at and decide if the cards speak to them. Otherwise why do you have them? I think it can be easy to tell someone who asks you, "Why do you have this deck?" that you just wanted it, or that the art looked nice. But I personally find it more fulfilling to only have an esoteric answer of, "I dunno... I just needed to pick them up when I saw them."

Examine the pictures. If you can, try to feel the deck. Maybe watch someone online open it up and see what's inside the box. Or, the moment you come across the cards in the online store, purchase them immediately and never look back.
